Why we moved to GitLab

Heyo!

In this post I will explain why we moved to GitLab and what that means for the future of our project. I will also talk a bit about the future of our project and the plans.

What happened to the downloads/repositories?

As you might have noticed, the Magma repositories have been moved away from GitHub, onto a different GitLab Server.
Nothing has been lost or deleted and everything will be as it was before, when everything is done.

Why did Magma move?

The story began when the owner of another Hybrid Software named FoxServer, which was just a full on copy of Magma and Mohist without credit, was DMCA'd by Magma. This caused the Developer to file a DMCA against Magma 1.16, which at the time included some code made by them. In order to protect Magma from such events in the future, we moved the main repository away from Github onto our own GitLab Server.

What does that mean for ME?

If you're not a developer, nothing will change for you. You can still download Magma from the website as usual, everything still works the same as before. If you're a developer or are more interested into how Magma works, you can login using your GitHub account or another account you can create on our GitLab.

What is planned for the future?

We're in contact with Mohist and are planning on merging parts of our 1.12.2 branches since Mohist plans on concentrating on newer versions of Minecraft. This will help us to add more features and to fix bugs that have been fixed in only one of both hybrids.
There is currently no information about what parts will be merged and how long it will take, but we hope to make the best software for both communities.

Server JAR for 1.16!

Heyo!

In this post I'm going to share the news about our new 1.16 server JAR and tell you, how you can install Magma 1.16 from now on.

What does server JAR mean?

Until now, you had to install Magma 1.16 by downloading the installer and executing it manually. This annoying process lead to some issues, for example not being able to auto-update our software.

Now, due to the help of Malcolm, Shawizz and Hexeption, we finally have a server JAR like we have for 1.12, meaning you don't have to run any installers, because the server JAR will download everything it needs by itself.

How can I install Magma now?

Well, you just download it, put it into a directory and run it. That's it, just like on 1.12. It will take slightly longer due to it having to download libraries on the first start though.

Does this have any side effects?

Beside from being more accessable for hosting providers? Not really. One thing that got implemented aswell is the ability to run Magma 1.16 with any version of Java ranging from Java 8 to Java 17 (it is still recommended to use Java 8).

What exactly is Magma?

Heyo!

In this post I will tell you a bit about what exactly Magma is and how it is related to Forge, (Craft)Bukkit, Spigot and Paper. While this most likely won't be 100% accurate, it should give you a basic understanding of what all these things are and how they work.

Where to begin?

Magma is a combination of Forge and Spigot. But what are these? I'm pretty sure you know what Forge is. If not, it is a modloader for Minecraft which allows the game to be extended with new blocks, mobs, items and more. Spigot/Bukkit are also well known by most server admins, but most people don't really know what exactly they are and how they are related to each other.

What's (Craft)Bukkit?

Bukkit is an API for creating Bukkit plugins. If you want to create a plugin for a Bukkit based server, you have to use the Bukkit API for this.
CraftBukkit on the other hand is an implementation of Bukkit for the Minecraft Vanilla server. It basically allows plugins to load and connects the Bukkit API with the real Minecraft Server, so that the API can interact with the server.

What's Spigot/Paper?

Spigot is a fork (follow up project) of CraftBukkit. This means it also is an implementation of Bukkit for the Minecraft server, but it also has some more features (BungeeCord, better performance, more config options, ...) and adds a few new methods to the Bukkit API.

Paper is a fork of Spigot. It is based on performance and bug-fixes, as Spigot's performance is not perfect. Paper also has a much bigger API and much more features compared to CraftBukkit/Spigot. The gap between Spigot and Paper is much bigger than the one between CraftBukkit and Spigot though, since Paper changes a lot of fundamental mechanics, such as chunkloading or world generation.

So what's Magma?

Magma takes all the changes that have been made by CraftBukkit and Spigot and implements them into the Forge server. Since Paper changes many fundamentals of the server, it is not possible to implement all Paper changes because they are incompatible with Forge. So in the end, Magma is Forge, but with the changes made by CraftBukkit and Spigot (and some Paper changes).

The end of Magma 1.16

Heyo!

In this post I'm going to share the news about why we decided to put Magma 1.16 in EOL-state.

What does EOL mean?

EOL stands End of Life. This means, we don't support it anymore and it won't be one of our main priorities anymore. While it might receive some updates in the future, we will focus on our other versions 1.12 and 1.18.

Why did you do that?

1.16 was extremely buggy. It was started when we had a very small developement team and during a time where 1.12 was still the main modding version, which is why it was treated as the less loved sibling. Even though we have much more developers right now, we still don't have enough team members to support it since making it run would most likely require a recode.

So what?

We will focus on the future versions of Forge, meaning 1.18 and most likely 1.20 and coming versions. 1.16 might return in the future, as it is an LTS Forge version, but it is not very likely.
